The History of Ashton Cigars

Owned by a Philadelphia based enterprise and named after a well known and respected English pipe-maker these fine tailored cigars are made in the Dominican Republic.

These cigars come in three different styles of flavor. The first is simply known as Ashton. Then there is the Ashton Cabinet Selection and the Ashton Aged Maduro. All three are wrapped in Conneticut Leaf, although the Ashton Aged Maduro is wrapped in broadleaf instead of shade, and is also filled with a Domincan blend. You really must try them all to find your own personal preference.

The Cabinet Selection is the mildest of the three, due to the extra aging of the tobacco. If you prefer a slightly richer smoke go with the standard selection. If you like a sweeter cigar go with a Maduro No. 10. I personally recommend the standard selection but the selection of cigars is truly a personal decision.

Ashton also offers the Ashton Crown series which is made with only the most precious leaves from the Chatea de la Fuente farm. These special cigars are always a great choice.

Ashton is definitely my favorite brand of cigars. The quality and consitency of associated with this brand is unsurpassed. My favorite is the Ashton VSG, or virgin sun grown cigar.

Cigars and Torpedos? I Love My Job

I must first start off by saying to everyone in the whole wide world through this lovely digital medium that I love my job!!! Not everyone can say that, but to taste cigars everyday is sheer bliss. The cigar on the plate today is another one from the Oliva Family in Nicaragua:

The Flor de Oliva Maduro Torpedo 6 x 52
This beautiful looking cigar comes with a Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper and an all Nicaraguan binder and filler which makes this a puro. These cigars come in a bundle of 25, another one of my little deals that I have found. As I mentioned in the previous review of the Flor de Oliva Gold, you can't go wrong with the bundles from Flor de Oliva. This cigar is going to be under $2 a stick which would qualify as a super deal for most of our readers. Now to the important stuff: how good of a smoke is it. I am a big fan of Maduro cigars as a whole. I love the dark rich oily look of them. Their sweetness to the tongue is quite a nice change from the usual Connecticut or Sumatra wrappers. When it comes to the Flor De Oliva line, I must admit I am quite a bit more partial to the Gold label rather than the Maduro. The reasons, well, you will just have to keep reading to find out.

This cigar looks great. The Maduro wrapper has a nice chocolaty look to it. The same dark brown color the entire wrapper over makes this cigar very appealing to the eyes. I haven't had any yet that have had a problem with big protruding veins, so overall, I would say that on looks, they score quite high.

The construction of the cigar would equally score very high marks. The cigar is jam packed with my beloved Nicaraguan tobacco yet, it is still very easy to draw and it produces a great amount of smoke. The cigar holds its white ash very well and I have very seldom seen it ever start unwrapping while smoking.

As with any Maduro, I would not recommend smoking this cigar where windy conditions could affect the burn. All Maduro wrappers tend to burn slowly, so if you smoke in windy conditions Maduro's tend to run and you will have to light the other end to get it burning smoothly again. Overall, I would say that wrapper performs like other good Maduro's. Just take your time and stay out of the wind.
The Taste of this puro

The taste of the cigar is quite nice. A smooth rich tobacco taste that lingers on the palette is what awaits you when you begin your cigar experience with this Maduro. As with all Flor de Oliva's bundles they can tend to be a bit fresh. You will want to age this cigar for a time. I tend to buy these cigars by the stick rather than by the bundle. I would say that about 50% of the time they have been too fresh to smoke. You will want to buy it and age it a bit in your humidor before you start smoking this one.

I wish the tobacco stores would take time to age their cigars, but they would rather have the few dollars then to have to store them any longer than they have too. The Oliva Maduro is a great cigar when aged, but you chances are about 50/50 of getting one that is too fresh, so expect that when you order. The aged ones are about as good as they get for a $2 smoke.

I am taking a break from the Flor De Oliva's for a few days. The next two cigars that I will be review are the Olor De Cibao Sumatra torpedo and a Te Amo Churchill. These are in my humidor and I am itching to see how they smoke.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Classic Tale of Obsession, Revenge, and Cigars

I read this book sometime last quarter, and it was definitely one of the better novels that I have read. It was written by Alexandre Dumas in 1844 originally in French. The story takes place during the 1800's in France/Italy. It's actually based on a true event, which makes it all the more impressive.

*Note: May contain spoilers.

The book centers around Edmond Dantes, an ordinary sailor. Good fortune shines on him: he gets a promotion and becomes engaged with the girl he loves. But this good fortune causes jealousy in those around him, and his so called "friends" hatch a scheme that lands him in a far away prison, equivalent to present day Alcatraz. He is left to rot in prison with no pardon for over 14 years. During his time in prison, he meets an abbey. The abbey teaches Edmond everything he knows, which was quite a bit (several languages, chemistry, etc.) and lastly leaves him with the location of a buried treasure.

Edmond escapes prison through an ingenious way, which is actually based on a true event. I won't say how he managed to escape, because I thought that was one of the high points of the story, so you'll have to read the book to find out (BOO for reading!). Anyways, he recovers the treasure (buried on a small island called Monte Cristo, hence the Count of Monte Cristo), and begins to plot his revenge. He spends an additional 10 years planning and scheming, using the vast resources left to him by the abbey before finally implementing his revenge.

The rest of the story involves him using his massive wealth to systematically get revenge on not just those who had wronged him, but their families as well. His plots and methods of getting revenge are intricate, cruel, and plain effective. A bunch of seemingly irrelevant events are introduced to the reader as the book goes on. Some are so far out there that I couldn't figure out what the connection was until the punchline (or maybe I'm just dumb). However, in the end, every little detail and occurrence all ties back into the Count's master plan. I won't say how he did it, because that would ruin the story, but he is able to formulate a plan to "justly" punish all of those that wronged him according to their motives for originally taking away his happiness.

I spent the beginning of the book feeling sorry for him, and then cheering for him as he was getting his much deserved revenge. But towards the end, I started to feel that he was taking things too far, and that he had become consumed entirely by his hatred. All in all, I thought this was a great book. I highly recommend it for leisure reading, as well as for a class. There are tons of literary motifs, themes, and archetypes to be analyzed. I probably would've really enjoyed reading this book for a class. Wow I'm such a nerd.

Nerdy part aside, several COOL movies were based on it, including V for Vendetta. That's not a nerdy movie is it?

Whiskey and Cigars: Pairing Life's Luxuries

Like two peas in a pod of the luxury world, cigars and whiskey can often be found together. Both known as two of the finer things in life, when used jointly, they work to enhance the drinking and smoking experience. This is particularly true when the drink being consumed is single malt scotch. Known as the Cuban cigar of the whiskey world, single malt scotch is the perfect drink to take out for a smoke.



What is Single Malt Scotch?

While many people know what single malt scotch entails, some people may not be completely clear. But, in actuality, the concept of single malt scotch is singularly simple: single malt scotch is essentially barely-malt whiskey made in Scotland that comes from only one distillery, allowing it to carry distinct aromas and flavors. In terms of whiskeys, single malt scotch is the most laudable: the Scottish have the title of world?s greatest whiskey in the bag?pipe.



Why are Cigars a Good Fit with Single Malt Scotch?

Cigars and single malt scotch have similar mantras: they both invoke specifics of the land and the maker; tobacco plants and barley both aim to remember their roots. To demonstrate this, cigars from different regions have different flavors: a Dominican Republic cigar will taste different than a cigar from Honduras. This is because each cigar aims to capture the distinct taste of the land and of the tobacco manufacturer, leaving no two cigar brands alike. Single Malt Scotch is the only type of whiskey that possesses this same ability; giving drinkers a cup of originality.



Some whiskeys journey through so many distilleries that they - like a whiskey that has drank too much of itself - forget who they are. This results in a whiskey with flavors that are vague, with little semblance to the roots of their homeland. Single Malt Scotch, however, stands out because it is processed through a single distillery. In addition, while other whiskeys can contain mixtures of corn, wheat, and unmalted barley, single malt scotch uses malted barely as the sole grain ingredient. This, ultimately, succeeds in instilling single malt scotch with the true taste of Scotland.



What Kinds of Cigars Compliment Single Malt Scotch?

There are a variety of cigars that compliment certain whiskeys, as if telling them that they have nice ryes. With single malt scotch, however, there are certain cigars for which this feat is tailor made; there are certain cigars that go better with single malt scotch than with nearly anything else.



There are two main routes to take when complimenting single malt scotch. The first route couples a mild cigar with a mild single malt scotch while the other route couples a strong cigar with a strong single malt scotch.



Mild Cigar and Mild Single Malt

When pairing a mild cigar with a mild single malt, the outcome isn?t just a bunch of mildness: the mild cigar and mild single malt won?t cause an urge to meditate among those who consume them. Instead, the mildness of each works together to enhance each other, resulting in a very unique experience.



A Highland Park single malt scotch and a La Flor Dominicana are examples of two things that go well together, tag teaming each other to create a truly luxurious experience. Highland Park scotches are known for being smooth, balanced, and filled with overtones of honey. A La Flor Dominicana is a mild cigar with anything but mild flavor, filled with the tastes of the Dominican Republic. When consumed together, a Highland Park and a La Flor Dominicana work together to enhance the experience, drawing out the best attributes of the tobacco and the whiskey.



Strong Cigar and Strong Single Malt

Pairing together a strong cigar with a strong single malt may seem like asking for trouble, as if each item will try to be stronger than the other, ultimately arm wrestling to see who has to pay the bar tab. However strong each item is, when paired together, they actually work with each other, complimenting each other?s strengths and erasing weaknesses.



A nice strong scotch is the Lagavulin Single Malt. Characterized by peatiness and iodine overtones, the Lagavulin couples well with the Joya De Nicaragua Antano 1970, a very full bodied, robust cigar. When this scotch and this cigar are consumed together, the result is a very flavorful, potent, and, above all, smoky experience. For this reason, if this experience could talk, it would sound like Beau Arthur.



What Kind of Cigars Contrast with Single Malt Scotch?

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a variety of cigars that contrast with single malt scotch, hitting heads to offset each other. Because these cigars and whiskeys have different attributes - putting the weak with the strong and vice versa - it may seem like these pairings will result in some sort of rivalry: the cigars and the scotch brawl, the fight ensuing until the cigars are crushed and the scotch tipped over. But, in actuality, the contrast works rather well.
