The History of Cohiba Cigars

For a brand of cigars that started out with no name Cohiba Cigars have gone a long way in gaining recognition as the best cigar in the world. In 1968 these nameless cigars were finally produced under the name Cohiba, coming in three sizes, each a personal favorite of Fidel, the Cohiba Lancero, the Cohiba Corona Especiale, and the Cohiba Panetela. Because they were all new they were given factory names of Lagito No. 1, No. 2 which had the unique feature of a tiny pigtail on their caps, and No. 3.



After 14 years of only being available to the government and diplomats Davidoff adopted the Cohiba, offering the No.1, the No. 2, and the Ambassadrice when he was granted his brand in 1969 and then by Montecristo in the early 1970s as the Especial, the Especial No. 2, and the Joyita.

A Brief History of Cigars and Tobacco

Have you ever wondered where cigars came from originally and how it became so popular over the years?

It is generally believed that cigars were first produced in Spain. But before cigars became all the rage in Europe, tobacco was needed to make them. It wasn't until Christopher Columbus sailed his famous voyage to the Americas in 1492 that the rest of the world came to know tobacco.Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, where native peoples have produced it for hundreds of years. It is believed that the Maya of Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America cultivated tobacco, and even smoked it! Tobacco use spread to other tribes, both north and south.

It is said that Columbus was not impressed by tobacco or its use among native peoples, but many sailors grew found of the strange plant. Soon it quickly caught on in Spain and Portugal. From there, it spread to France, where the French ambassador Jean Nicot lent his name to the scientific name for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The origins of the word tobacco itself are still suspect, although many believe it is simply a corruption of the word Tobago, which is the name of a Caribbean island. Still others believe it comes from the word Tabasco, a region (and now state) in Mexico.

The cigar was not introduced to the United States until the late 18th century. The first tobacco plantation in the United States was established in Virginia in 1612. More tobacco plantations followed in Maryland soon after. It is believed that its first use in the United States was probably among the tribe along the Mississippi Although tobacco became a popular crop, it was only smoked in pipes.

Israel Putnam, an army general who had served in the Revolutionary War, is credited with introducing the cigar to the masses in United States. He had traveled to Cuba after the Revolutionary War and returned with a box of Cuban cigars. Their popularity quickly spread, and soon enough cigar factories were established in the area of Harford, Connecticut, where General Putnam resided.

In Europe, cigar production and consumption did not achieve widespread popularity until after the Peninsula War in the early 19th century. British and French veterans returned to their homelands after years of serving in Spain with their tobacco pipes in tow. Among the rich and fashionable, the favored method of taking tobacco was the cigar. Cigar smoking remains a habit associated with the rich and discriminating of upper society.

The History of Ashton Cigars

Owned by a Philadelphia based enterprise and named after a well known and respected English pipe-maker these fine tailored cigars are made in the Dominican Republic.

These cigars come in three different styles of flavor. The first is simply known as Ashton. Then there is the Ashton Cabinet Selection and the Ashton Aged Maduro. All three are wrapped in Conneticut Leaf, although the Ashton Aged Maduro is wrapped in broadleaf instead of shade, and is also filled with a Domincan blend. You really must try them all to find your own personal preference.

The Cabinet Selection is the mildest of the three, due to the extra aging of the tobacco. If you prefer a slightly richer smoke go with the standard selection. If you like a sweeter cigar go with a Maduro No. 10. I personally recommend the standard selection but the selection of cigars is truly a personal decision.

Ashton also offers the Ashton Crown series which is made with only the most precious leaves from the Chatea de la Fuente farm. These special cigars are always a great choice.

Ashton is definitely my favorite brand of cigars. The quality and consitency of associated with this brand is unsurpassed. My favorite is the Ashton VSG, or virgin sun grown cigar.

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Mexico face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco to Mexico? How important is Mexico compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco vary from one country of origin to another in Mexico? On the supply side, Mexico also exports cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco. Which countries receive the most exports from Mexico? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Mexico. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Mexico is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Mexico compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

A Short History of Cigars and Tobacco

Have you ever wondered where cigars were first produced? It is widely believed that cigars were first produced in Spain. But before cigars became all the rage in Europe, tobacco was needed to make them. Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, where native peoples have produced it for hundreds of years. It is believed that the Maya of Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America cultivated tobacco, and even smoked it! Tobacco use spread to other tribes Thank You For Smoking, both north and south. It is believed that its first use in the United States was probably among the tribe along the Mississippi. It wasn't until Christopher Columbus sailed his famous voyage to the Americas in 1492 that the rest of the world came to know tobacco.

It is said that Columbus was not impressed by tobacco or its use among No Smoking native peoples, but many sailors grew found of the strange plant. Soon it quickly caught on in Spain and Portugal. From there, it Cigarette spread to France, where the French ambassador Jean Nicot lent his name to the scientific name for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The origins of the word tobacco itself are still suspect, although many believe it is simply a corruption of the word Tobago, which is the name of a Caribbean island. Still others believe it comes from the word Tabasco, a region (and now state) in Mexico.

The first tobacco plantation in the United States was established in Virginia in 1612. More tobacco plantations followed in Maryland soon after. Although tobacco became a popular crop, it was only smoked in pipes. The cigar was not introduced to the United States until the late 18th century. Israel Putnam, an army general who had served in the Revolutionary War, is credited with introducing the cigar to the United States. He had traveled to Cuba after the Revolutionary War and returned with a box of Cuban cigars. Their popularity quickly spread, and soon enough cigar factories were established in the area of Harford, Connecticut, where General Putnam resided.

In Europe, cigar production and consumption did not achieve widespread popularity until after the Peninsula War in the early 19th century. British and French veterans returned to their homelands after years of serving Quitting Smoking in Spain with their tobacco pipes in tow.
